Chances are that you are familiar with Belur and Halebid, the two places best noted for the magnificence of Hoysala architecture. This dynasty, which flourished between the 10th and 14th centuries, was an important bridge that connected the Pallavas, the Chalukyas and the Cholas to the later Vijayanagar empire. With its headquarters at Halebid or to give it its ancient name – Dwarasamudra, it was one of the three Hindu kingdoms that faced the brunt of Malik Kafur in the early 14th century, the others being the Kakatiyas of Warangal and the Yadavas of Devagiri.
Hoysala rule was a time when Jainism, Shaivism and Vaishnavism flourished. The kings and queens were great temple builders and left behind their impress by way of highly ornate edifices. Around Karnataka are 200 temples or so, that stand testimony to the way architecture grew under the Hoysalas. Each of these shrines is unique. The largest collection of such temples is around the modern city of Hassan and that forms the core of our heritage tour.
Handpicked by Sriram V, heritage enthusiast, the tour offers you a guided insight into what makes Hoysala architecture stand out. But that is not all. The area offers lots more – old forts belonging to Tipu Sultan, churches built for the French and of course, music. Some of these Hoysala shrines were visited by Purandara Dasa and Kanakadasa. In modern times, poet and scholar DV Gundappa was moved to compose songs by the beauty of the sculptures at Belur. To bring these songs to life we have singer Ashwath Narayanan accompanying us on this tour.
