San Thome was the big city when the English arrived here with dreams of building a small trading post. When Madras had a population of three (Thimmappa, Nagabathan and Francis Day), San Thome had 10,000 people within its walls, for yes, it was a fortified city. San Thome, the town of St Thomas is not just the cathedral – strewn around are small reminders of the fact that this was once a Portuguese town. Some old churches, a few street names, a flagstaff, and who knows what else.
