India, where people do not take matters seriously. Authorities are not the only ones to be blamed, but also the people who just throw garbage like this also should be blamed.
Why is this so common a sight – not only in Chennai?
I have recently returned home after a month around Chennai and other cities in Tamil Nadu and Andhra and notice that so many of my photos include scenes like the one pictured. No, I didn’t go out of my way to photograph trash; I couldn’t avoid it. I saw very few roadside trash cans into which people could deposit their rubbish.
School children throughout my visit always impressed me with their neat, clean appearance. What a pity they have to walk through settings like the one you picture. Maybe when they become adults they will improve the situation. You can wish!
Only in Vijayawada did I see streets being swept – and it made such a positive difference to the streetscape. Why can’t better provision be made for rubbish disposal in all the cities?
In one city, I was told that it used to be called the ‘garden city of India’ but now it is called ‘the garbage city of India’ 🙁
Maybe India doesn’t want tourists.

And they expect next gen kids to be disciplined!
