An Evening in Evening Bazaar – A Heritage Walk
It may be a civic nightmare today, but Evening Bazaar was once a curving promenade that followed at a respectful distance the contours of Fort St George. This was where much of what was brought from the ships came to be sold each evening, and thus sprang up a bazaar, on the outskirts of what were once Muthialpet and Peddunaickenpet. And to its rear was a mound, of which not a trace remains today. What was once Evening Bazaar slowly grew to China Bazaar, Rattan Bazaar and Mat Bazaar, holding within it the keys of the retail industry in Madras. To explore Evening Bazaar is to understand how Madras grew as a commercial and retail capital. Join us on this heritage walk conducted by Sriram V.
On the anvil are heritage buildings, communities ranging from the Chinese to Cutchi Memons, and of course, lots of stories.
