Flying South for Summer – a heritage tour of Nanji Nadu – May 27 to 30, 2022

The temple at Tirupathisaram aka Tiruvanparisaram

Wedged as it was between two powerful kingdoms – the Pandyas and Cholas to the east and the Cheras and later the Travancore rulers to the west, the region comprising Kanyakumari, Nagercoil and around is unique – vast estates of pepper and coffee, hallowed shrines known for piety and poetry, a quaint touch of the Dutch, plenty of waterbodies, a fort or two and plenty of stories.

Chances are of course that you have visited Kanyakumari, seen the wonderful sunrise and sunset there, and taken in the local sights. But have you heard of Thiruvanparisaram or admired the architecture and the deity at Thiruvattar? Both of these are Divya Desams- shrines hallowed by the visit of Alwars. And we have a surprising number of Chola era temples such as the little-known Choliswaram and the magnificent Suchindram temple, which in its present form shows more Nayak and Travancore influence.

Can there be another structure like the Padmanabhapuram Palace? A true display of Travancore architecture and way of life, it remains well preserved. There are besides tiny forts like the ones at Udayagiri and Vattakottai, which too are worth a visit.

Handpicked by Sriram V, heritage enthusiast, the tour offers you a guided insight into some aspects of the region. But that is not all – the true beauty of Indian heritage lies in the multiple layers that keep surfacing for us to delight in.
