Raja Annamalai Mandram

This walk, which was earlier scheduled for November 27, had to be postponed owing to bad weather. Those who are still interested may join.

It stands as a grand edifice – a stately mix of art deco and traditional Chettinad, right at the corner of the Esplanade. The Raja Annamalai Manram is the home of the Tamil Isai Sangam, the organisation that first spread the message that Tamil is as musical a language as any other. You would think that was obvious, but in the early 1940s that was not so. Pitched battles were fought, often bordering on the ludicrous, but Tamil did win in the end. That it did so was largely because of the Tamil Isai Sangam and the man whose statue stands outside the building – Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar.

Come and listen to the history of this building and the organisation it houses. Be prepared to be mesmerised by the musical stories that it holds. And above all, enjoy the state of art museum of musical instruments that it contains. Marvel at some of the possessions of our stars from the past, lovingly preserved over here.

Join Sriram V on this journey of how Tamil took its rightful place as musical language. We thank the trustees of the Tamil Isai Sangam for allowing us to explore the premises.
