It was just a dirt track leading to the beach in the 1840s and Freemasons were so terrified of its darkness that they preferred to sell their property at its edge to the police. It became Edward Elliots Road thereafter, transforming into a broad road lined with bungalows that housed stars in every field – law, philosophy, cinema, industry, education, medicine and social reform. It is now a commercial thoroughfare named after India’s celebrated philosopher, thinker and President – Dr Sir S Radhakrishnan.
