Heritage walk on Commander-in-Chief Road, Egmore, 17th November

It is called Ethiraj Salai today after the brilliant lawyer who left much of his wealth to education. In the old day’s it was Commander-in-Chief’s Road because the largest building here was the residence of the supremo of the Madras Army. All around it came up residences of some of Chennai’s greats – a husband and wife who both became Mayors of the city, the first Indian Chief Justice of the High Court of Madras and many others. Add a couple of multinationals, the Connemara – the hotel that memorialised a scandal, and a secret society- and you have a heady mix.
