Cambodia or Kampuchea, is one of those countries that we Indians can readily associate with. This is essentially because of the several centuries of Hinduism and Buddhism that pervades the nation. The best known aspects of that country relate to its years of struggle under the Pol Pot regime and the subsequent uphill battle it has faced in its ongo ing search for prosperity.
Central to Cambodian history is a series of Hindu temples that have also officiated as Buddhist monasteries and shrines. Angkor Wat is perhaps the most popular but there was several more. The similarities with South Indian temple architecture are striking and when we say that located in one of the shrines is a niche that features Karaikkal Ammaiyar, we have said it all.
Cambodia is not just temples. There is natural beauty. It is a handicrafts paradise – silk, woodcarving, metal work – you name it and they have it. Come join historian Sriram V on a three night/four day tour of the Siem Reap region of Cambodia.
