Once upon a time, there was a village called Nungambakkam. Central to it is a temple, dedicated to Agastiswara, fronting which is a tank that was full of water not so very long ago. Vestiges of that old village still remain. Village Road was in reality Nungambakkam Village Road.

That was not all. Until 40 years ago, Nungambakkam High Road was a silent and eerie stretch, if you went there at any time of the day or night. It comprised a series of large bungalows, set in larger gardens. Each property was named after a village from lands very far away – Chipstead, Walthamstow, Turramurra and Dadnor were some of the names. Residing in these were mad Maharajahs, unhappy actresses, scheming actors, ambitious businessmen and some great minds. Come join historian Sriram V on a walking tour of Nungambakkam on Sunday, April 22, 2018.

Time: 6.00 to 8.00 am, followed by breakfast at The Slate, KNK Road, Nungambakkam.

Fare: Rs 800 per person
