It may be an urban horror today but Theagaroya Nagar to give it its full and proper name was the first planned locality to come up in Madras in the 20th century. Plainly modelled as a scaled down version of Lutyens’ New Delhi, it was the New Town and the city’s showpiece when it was built in the 1920s. The history of T Nagar has much to do with the history of our city – the rise of Dravidian politics, the freedom struggle, the world of cinema, the time when Madras still had a number of Andhras living in it and of course the history of retail…
