Today being a Sunday, there were phenomenal crowds at the Mylapore temple by 6.00 am. The Gods took their time coming out, with Kapali still at the 16-pillared hall at 6.30 by which time I had to leave. So managed just a few shots and not very good ones at that.

Kapali’s dance was an spirited as ever. I saw a friend from an old Mylapore family wiping her eyes, saying she never tires of the spectacle. I was thinking that she is the fourth generation in her family to witness the event, the great grandfather having probably first seen it in the 1880s!

The deity coming out from the temple is always a thrilling sight for me.

Equally thrilling is the sight of the sea of outstretched hands for vibhuti prasadam.
