Last month, as part of the Bhoopala Bharatam festival organised by the Natyarangam Trust, I gave a talk on the contribution of the Thanjavur Marathas to the arts. I was pleasantly surprised to find a recording of it on Youtube –http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qmrioebZJo
There are some errors (it was an extempore speech) – Syama Sastry’s ancestors roamed around for 220 years and not 120, just to mention one. I also left out the role of Sarabhoji as a composer. But for what it is worth, here it is.
Thanks for sharing. If you will observe the Hindustani music also were patronised in the Maratha region in Belgaum( now in Karnataka) and around Sholapur regions.. It is not a surprise that the Marathas in Thanjavur patronised Carnatic music. Very true that they deserve the credit of encouraging carnatic music rather than destroying it from a seat of power..
Nice informative talk (liked it as I had lived in Turuvarur for the first 12 years of my life) There is a “bigger” slip of the tongue around 13:43 minute mark.
