In its early years, the Music Academy imposed a complete ban on upa-pakkavadyams, deeming them unnecessary. The first concert with a ghatam artiste was that of MS Subbulakshmi in 1947. The artiste? Alangudi Ramachandran.

It was nice of them to hv the ban unlocked! Talking of Ghatam, Alangudi Ramachandran & Vilvadri Iyer were two leding players of that time. The former used to throw his ghatm up in the air & catch it back within the talam, which used to be very amusing. Ramachandan was living in Mandavali £ it was a common sight that you could often bump into him walking slightly limpingly on the RK Mutt Road:)
