கூம்புப் பனிக் குழம்பி (koombup panik kuzhambi) is cone ice cream.

Speaking of literarally transated words–how literal can you get? Coffee Works is kuLambip ‘paNigaL’?! kuzhambum paNigal, ivai ellAm!
The reason for tamizhAkkam is to make the signs understandable for those who cannot read English. The result here? Take them away from the meaning of the words as much as possible. ‘Works’ is just something which means an establishment, a manufacturing place.
While some tamizhAkkangaL are beautiful to hear, this is taking the language farther away from clarity in the meaning of words.
Some new words indeed. I believe some of these were words made up by Devaneya Paavanar. Also, I’m not sure about this but Panikkuzh might be icecream and panikkuzhayam sounds like ice cream house.
kUzh perhaps makes it humble-sounding, and an ice cream vendor might not favor it 😉 kuzhaivu is good enough, I think.
Another sign says sIvari. Is it savoury, as in kAram? (again, a misnomer!).
I had missed your ‘seevari=chips’! sIval, something finely sliced, as in sIval pAkku, understood. Then why sEvari–which led me to think it was savoury? sIvalagam is more like it, which of course can sound like sEvalagam, a poultry shop!
But what takes the cake are the signboards in the lanes where automobile parts are sold…Pudupet

Ha Ha Ha One can imagine clutche, steering wheels, hub caps etc. etc. doing a Thaaniyangi stuff and having a gala time once the shops close at night !! Why can’t they just write in Tamil “Auto parts ” !!
