Today everyone goes to the beach on Kaanum Pongal day. But in the past, the must see places were three –
Setta Kalej (the museum)
Uyir Kalej (the zoo)
Bommai Kalej (the College of Arts and Crafts)
It helped that all three were in the Egmore-Poonamallee High Road circuit.
Bommai college was a real college and ppl were allowed in there? Pl. explain more
Vijee
It still survives. It is today known as the Government College of Arts and Crafts (Kavinkalai Kalluri) and stands on Poonamallee High Road between Central and Egmore stations. It is a mere shell of its former self. But it is a beautiful campus full of trees and heritage buildings. The legendary Chisholm, DP Roy Chowdhury (who sculpted the Mahatma Gandhi statues that adorn Bombay, Madras and Calcutta and the Triumph of Labour statue on the Marina) and several other great artistes officiated as Principals. It was known as Bommai Kalej as it had sculptures too.
You really took me back in time. I went down my memory lane….I went back to my school days
Very nice that the campus is still full of trees. Thank you for the explanation Sriram.
