the piece on Mysore vasudevachaar was a very informative one. It seems that scholars – iwth complex intellectual lives and simple physical existence – have become an almost extinct species. My humble namaskarams to Vasudevaachaarval!
Dear Sriram,
Just a couple of constructive nitpicks on the Mysore Vasudevachar piece.
1. The headline states boldly, “When an musical era ended…” Tut, tut. An indefinite article preceding a consonant – that too in a headline ? The first line in your article, ironically, says “That was the headline for The Hindu’s editorial dated May 19, 1961. Question – was that the original headline, in which case a (sic) would have been appropriate. Or, is it, as I suspect, a printer’s devil in the May 28, 2010 issue ?
2. The last paragraph of The Hindu’s editorial also states, inter alia, “It is our tradition that a considerable part of our cultural lore should centre round our great musicians”. Here I hold The Hindu guilty of an unintended, if frequently commited, oxymoron. One cannot “centre round” anything, one can only “centre on” something.
Pardon the somewhat pedantic nature of this letter, but one cannot sit by idly and allow The Hindu, of all institutions, to get away with grammatical slips, however slight. For lesser sins, my English master in school would have invited me to bend over and taste six of the best !
Cheers.
Suresh.
