As Tyagaraja said in Etula Brotuvo I have wandered like a stray bull filling my stomach and paid the price for it with a bad upset on Saturday. So missed the lec dem at the Academy. Reports have it that Thayumanavar was outstanding in his lec dem on the art of konnakkol. So I was not lucky.
On Sunday 28th I lecced (no dem) at the Tag Centre and so I missed the AKC Natarajan/BM Sundaram lec dem as well.
Hope you’ve re-discovered the royal path to recovery as said in Chakkani Raja.Heard that Gnaanambika Jayaraman has an outlet at Vani Mahal this year. How did you miss it?
Was the TAG talk on MMD as Sanjay had mentioned in his blog?Do you plan to write about it in The hindu or this blog soon???
Tk care,
Prasanna
Hi Prasanna
This Gnaanambika is a son in law of Jayarama and to quote Tyagaraja he is a varagalaya agnana in comparison. In any case I cannot bring myself to worship any Itara Daivamu. Nenendu vedakudura about sums up my plight.
I give two talks at TAG each December. The one on the 14th was on MMD. The one on 28th was on Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar.
Oh!ok.Didn’t know that not all Gnaanabikas are those of Jayaraman’s!
Coming back to my question-do you plan to share the contents of the talk through this blog?
Thanks,
Prasanna
I ventured out to write an article on your talk at the TAG, but it turned out to be about you 🙂

To leave a brief account of Thayumanavar’s lecdem on Konnakkol.
It was great to see an overflowing hall for something as niche as Konnakol. Thaymumanavar was impressive with his demonstrations of the training and paddhati of konnakol. While mridangam students would see this as an extension of “sollukattu”, the nuances of actual konakkol accompaniment on stage were demonstrated, with a “not quite good” singer.
Some members of the expert committee shared some nostalgic comments about konnakol accompaniment in concerts.
What was missing was any mention of different styles of konnakol. Dr.PVR was probably wrong in mentioning that there was no konakkol tradition in AP. I do not know if there is an equivalent word for konakkol in AP, but I have witnessed a concert in hyderabad with konakkol accompaniment. The solkattu’s have some very significant differences.
